Screen Shot 2015-08-18 at 10.42.42 PMMACKINAC ISLAND — A triumphant Rick Warner stepped off of Areté Sunday afternoon and handed Ray Howe a shirt.

It was a gift from the current king of Great Lakes multihulls to the former, as Howe owns Earth Voyager, the last 60-foot trimaran to take the Port Huron-to-Mackinac Island sailboat race by storm.

This year it was Areté — also a 60-foot trimaran, which is owned by Marine City’s Warner — that stole the show in the race, finishing as the first boat to the island, crossing the finish line at 12:53 p.m. Sunday.

“It’s a new generation of trimarans from France,” Howe said. “It was designed to race the Route du Rhum, the greatest sailboat race in history. Fifty-five, 60-million people watch the Route du Rhum, and this boat was in it. It’s great to have them on the Great Lakes. I just think it’s wonderful.”
